Major General Nimcaan Yusuf Osman serves as the Chief of the General Staff of the Somaliland National Armed Forces (SNAF), the highest-ranking military officer responsible for the strategic command, operational readiness, and professional development of Somaliland’s defense forces.
With decades of experience in military leadership and national security, Major General Nimcaan has built a reputation as a strategic thinker, reform-oriented commander, and disciplined military professional. His leadership focuses on strengthening the institutional capacity of the Somaliland National Armed Forces while safeguarding the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability of the Republic of Somaliland.
  Major General Nimcaan strongly advocates for professional military education and institutional capacity building. Over the course of his career, he has attended several prestigious international military training institutions and strategic programs.
He completed advanced command and leadership programs at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, one of the world’s leading institutions for senior military education and strategic studies.
In addition, he pursued specialized studies in Security Sector Management and Defence Studies at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, gaining expertise in modern defense management, institutional reform, and strategic planning.
His international exposure also includes participation in regional security forums, high-level military engagements, and diplomatic defense visits, including official military engagements in Ethiopia and various security dialogues across the Horn of Africa.

Leadership and Institutional Reforms

Since assuming the position of Chief of the General Staff, Major General Nimcaan has led several important initiatives aimed at modernizing and professionalizing the Somaliland National Armed Forces.
One of his key priorities has been the modernization of the military structure, introducing a comprehensive roadmap to improve operational capability, logistics management, and digital command systems within the armed forces.
He has also played a significant role in strengthening the Dararweyne Military Academy, ensuring that new recruits and officer cadets receive high-standard military training aligned with modern professional military education.
Under his leadership, the armed forces have further strengthened regional security cooperation and partnerships, working with international partners to address shared security challenges such as maritime security threats, piracy, and regional instability.
Major General Nimcaan has also emphasized discipline, unity, and institutional cohesion, successfully overseeing the integration and professional management of different military units into a unified national defense force.
